Interesting Matthews include Toby (or Tobias) Matthews (1546-1628), the Archbishop of York, who was entrusted with the care of Elizabeth I's cousin Lady Arabella Stuart, but failed to prevent her escape. His son and namesake (1577-1655) further blotted the family copybook by going to Rome and becoming a Catholic priest. He later, however, won royal favour and became the Stuarts' advisor on Catholic affairs. When the Civil War broke out, both Houses of Parliament slung Toby Matthews out of the country, and he died in exile in Ghent.
A different Matthews was Thomas (1805-89), an actor trained by Grimaldi, who became a clown at Sadler's Wells and performed pantomimes all over Europe. □
