With no safe birth control available, many couples had large families. As paupers received more relief if they had lots of children, this could become a drain on the parish. As a result, there was a tendency to cut a pauper's allowance after a fourth child.
Union Infirmary from 1874-1930 and Hackney Institution from 1930-1948. In 1974, Hackney Hospital, became part of the new City and Hackney Health District, the teaching hospital for which was St Bartholomew's Hospital. This is why the archives of Hackney Hospital are now held at St Bart's.
