General information sites

If you're looking for information on how to order vital records within the United States, you can choose among a few sites. Vital Records Information -United States (vitalrec.com/index.html) is probably the most comprehensive site. A page for each state lists the type of record, its cost, the address to which you should send requests, and additional remarks, such as the time period during which records were kept and to whom to make the check payable. You also can find information on obtaining vital records for foreign or high-sea births and deaths of United States citizens.

Although the Vital Records Information site doesn't contain any online indexes or records, using it is a good way to become familiar with where each state stores its vital records. Later on, as you locate records on more ancestors, you can use this site as a quick reference for getting mailing addresses for your many records requests.
